Main challenge
In Extremis is a game created on Bitsy in two weeks, with the aim of seeing how far we could push game design on an extremely limited 8-bit engine.

The goal was to develop game mechanics and storytelling despite the technical constraints.



Design process
Bitsy imposes very strict constraints:
  • 2 colors per table,
  • 8x8 tiles,
  • very few scripting tools.

To get around these limitations, we had to be clever :
  • we built the environment on several combined tiles to create more complex shapes,
  • created infiltration mechanics by playing with the game over conditions,
  • wrote short dialogues where every word counts to give depth to an 8-bit world.


Results
Ultimately, despite the limitations of the engine, In Extremis is a coherent short (10-minute) with a dark atmosphere. If I were to do it again, I would add music for greater immersion and checkpoints to make it less punishing.





What I learned
This project allowed me to strengthen :
  • my ability to design under constraints,
  • my sense of minimalist storytelling,
  • my creativity in building mechanics with very few tools.
